Public Lands Access to land is simplified by the large percent of public lands present in the Great Salt Lake Basin.A great deal of the Great Salt Lake Basin is publicly owned in Forest Service, BLM, and State lands. This will greatly ease the access to land throughout the basin, and will open the doors for the location of research infrastructure that may otherwise be impossible. The following figures show the distribution of land ownership within each of the four major subbasins that make up the Great Salt Lake Basin.
In general, the National Forest Lands (US Forest Service) are located in the higher elevation, mountainous areas of the watershed. The BLM lands are primarily located in the West Desert and Bear River Watersheds, and are generally associated with middle to lower elevation rangelands. Private areas of the watershed are typically located in the valley floors where agricultural and urban development has historically taken place. The following figure shows the distribution of land ownership throughout the basin.
