Recreation and Transportation The Great Salt Lake Basin is attractive to visitors year round, with a wealth of recreational opportunities. The Great Salt Lake basin is centrally located within the Western US, with transportation infrastructure that makes it easily accessible. An international airport is located near the center of the Great Salt Lake Basin.
Historic Park City, located just east of Salt Lake City, provides the opportunity to enjoy many of these recreational activities in a very relaxed and picturesque setting. Once a booming mining town, Park City is now known for its historical Main Street shopping and nightlife and its proximity to several major ski areas, summer mountain resorts, and Legacy Venues from the 2002 Winter Olympics. Ski Utah!
Transportation An international airport is located near the center of the Great Salt Lake Basin in Salt Lake City, and commute times to any of the interesting locations within the basin from the airport are relatively short. The figure below shows the 70 nonstop destinations of daily departures from the Salt Lake City Airport.
In addition, two major interstate highways (I-15 and I-80) and an extensive network of state highways and local roads provide easy transportation to nearly all of the interesting locations within the basin.
